I was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson’s at the age of 44, and I have been living with the symptoms of young onset Parkinson’s for 7 years. I don’t get enough sleep. I am averaging 4 hours of sleep at night and I don’t sleep during the day because I won’t sleep at night. My sleep patterns have changed since having young onset Parkinson’s, and my sleep patterns are definitely affecting my partner. The factors impacting on my ability to sleep include cramping, difficulty turning over in bed, Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), frequent awakening, rigidity while in bed, night-time urination, tremors while in bed, pain and depression. None of the strategies listed have been useful or could be useful in improving my sleep patterns. I sleep if I take sleeping tablets, which comes with its own problem.
