The role of an Occupational Therapist is to assist people to be as independent as possible in everyday life. The ability to drive is recognised as important for maintaining freedom and independence.
What is an Occupational Therapy Driving Assessment?
An Occupational Therapy Driving Assessment can look at a number of aspects to do with driving, and usually includes an on-road component and an off-road component. The on-road assessment may take place in the instructor’s vehicle, and part of the assessment may be able to be undertaken in the client’s own vehicle if it is roadworthy, registered and insured.

- Vehicle modifications which may assist the driver
- Limitations with strength and coordination
- Physical ability to control the vehicle
- Issues with motion including ability to turn the neck

The cost of an assessment will vary depending on reporting requirements and whether you are an NDIS participant.
How can I organise an Occupational Therapy Driving Assessment?
Your doctor may refer you for an assessment to allow for a qualified driving assessor to identify any course of action. A report will then be sent to your doctor.
If you have been referred by your state vehicle licencing authority or your employer, a more detailed report will be forwarded to them.
Alternatively, anyone can attend a driving assessment with or without a referral, and a list of what to bring on the day will be provided upon booking.
