On 29 June 2026, the Senate Community Affairs Legislation Committee (which is conducting the current inquiry into the Securing the NDIS for Future Generations Bill) has reopened the opportunity to make a formal submission to the Committee. Parkinson’s Australia made a comprehensive submission. We are currently drafting a supplementary submission to ensure early intervention and other priorities are loud and clear!
Some changes have already been made. The Greens secured an eight-week extension to the current Senate inquiry into the NDIS amendment Bill, until 14 August 2026, allowing extra time for further public hearings and consideration of the thousands of submissions presented to the committee so far. You can read about the amendments and the Greens announcement here, but in summary:
- Restricting the scope of support determination powers by ensuring that cuts cannot be applied to support categories of Daily Living, Transport, Consumables, Assistive Technology, or Home Modifications.
- Limiting the impact of the Minister’s changes to Support Determinations relating to Social, Community, and Civic participation. The Minister cannot make cuts to supports that people rely on for daily health needs, attending medical appointments or getting to work.
- Ensuring that where a person is required to access treatment before becoming eligible for the NDIS, that treatment cannot be a restrictive practice, such as forced medication. It must also be a publicly funded service available through Medicare, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, or the public health system.
- Ensuring greater transparency on the detail of how automated decisions will be made, by requiring that decision making frameworks for evaluative decisions are made publicly available before being implemented.
- Reducing the scope of the transitional power by reducing the timeframe for making transitional Rules to 6 months for every part of the Bill except for Schedule 4 (New Framework Planning) and Schedule 1, Parts 5 and 6 (Reasonable and Necessary and Plan Renewals).
