What is My Health Record?

My Health Record is a safe and secure place to keep your key health information available to you, your representatives and your healthcare providers anytime, including in an emergency.

Healthcare providers involved in your care, like doctors, pathologists, and pharmacists, can upload clinical documents to your record during and after your appointment.

You have control over your information that is shared, and can restrict documents from being viewed, as well as choose which healthcare organisations can view it at any time.

What information is available on My Health Record?

My Health Record information includes:

  • Allergies, medicines, adverse reaction/s
  • Care and support plans
  • Diagnostic imaging reports
  • Discharge summaries
  • E-referrals
  • Event summaries
  • Goals of care documents
  • Immunisations
  • Pathology reports
  • Pharmacist shared medicine lists
  • Prescription and dispense records
  • Shared health summaries
  • Specialist letters
  • Transfer & residential care facility documents.

Who can access your My Health Record?

  • You (the owner of the information)
  • Your healthcare providers (subject to any access controls you have in place)
  • Your authorised representative – An authorised representative is responsible for managing the My Health Record of their dependant. They may be someone with parental responsibility, a carer, family member, legal guardian or someone with enduring power of attorney.
  • Your nominated representative, including emergency contacts – A nominated representative is a person you or an authorised representative invite to access your record so they can view or help you manage it. They might be a family member, close friend, or carer and must act in accordance with your will and preferences.

How do you access My Health Record?

My Health Record is set up online. It provides users secure and convenient access to your health information, and you can control who can see your health information. It can be set up and accessed online or via a mobile app.

Security and the My Health Record System

We know security is important to you. There are people, processes, technologies and legislation keeping the information in My Health Record safe and secure.

People

The My Health Record system is monitored by the Cyber Security Team within the Australian Digital Health Agency. All personnel involved with the administration of the system undergo security checks.

Process

A range of security processes limit access to the My Health Record system. External software providers go through a testing to make sure it meets specific standards. This includes healthcare provider software and mobile applications.

Technology

A range of technologies are in place to protect the sensitive personal and health information held in the My Health Record system, including:

  • firewalls to block unauthorised access
  • audit logs to track access to records
  • initial and regular anti-virus scanning of
  • documents uploaded to records
  • system monitoring to detect suspicious activity

Legislation

Your information in the My Health Record system is protected by legislation:

  1. My Health Records Act 2012
  2. Privacy Act 1988
  3. Healthcare Identifiers Act 2010
  4. My Health Records Rule 2016
